Gareth Johnson, MP for Dartford visited the Medway Community Healthcare’s Adult SLT Team at Darent Valley hospital in mid-November.
The Kent based speech and language therapy team raised awareness of their services and profession by erecting a stand within the hospital foyer area. They used a wide range of resources and games, some of which were provided by their Mouth Care Matters Lead, Sarah Haslam.
Afterwards the MP joined them for a departmental lunch where he was shown a video about their SLT service and patients discussed their experiences of speech and language therapy. This included a patient who had a laryngectomy following throat cancer, one who used an iPad to support his speech and another who previously was unable to eat or drink safely following a stroke.
Commenting on the day was Abigail Scott, MCH Speech and Language Therapist, who said
“We were able to promote the role of the team to the public and increase their knowledge on how we help with speech, language and swallowing problems. The day went really well”.
