University of Reading speech and language therapy (SLT) student, Hannah May, reports on the biennial SLT Society Giving Voice Ball, held on 3 June 2016 at the local Hilton Hotel.
The event, which celebrated speech and language therapy and raised awareness of and money for the RCSLT’s Giving Voice Campaign, was attended by around 140 university staff and students – both past and present – as well as family and friends. Guests were treated to a champagne reception, a three
course meal and a disco.
Bill McFarlane and Andy McCabe gave moving speeches about their first-hand experiences of SLT in the context of post-stroke aphasia and lifelong stammers. Their brave stories really highlighted the importance of SLT intervention. Derek Munn, the RCSLT’s Director of Policy and Public Affairs, also gave an inspiring speech about how to build a campaign and spread the word about speech and language therapy.
