This year’s theme for the Comité Permanent de Liaison des Orthophonistes-Logopèdes de l’UE (CPLOL) European Day of Speech and Language Therapy is ‘multilingualism and multi-ethnicity’. It’s the ideal platform to showcase the work SLTs do with multi-lingual clients across the UK. With other CPLOL members participating in the ICP 2014, the day will provide a great opportunity to raise awareness of speech and language therapy and our work with multilingualism.

Raise awareness of speech and language therapy on March 6th.

Promote your work with Bilingual clients and service users: Do you provide services to a high number of bilingual clients? Go out into your local community on March 6th and let them know.

Celebrate the diversity of your local area: Arrange a competition for service users, parents and families. You could: -

  • Ask children and families to complete ICP or Giving Voice speech bubble in the different languages they speak
  • Have an international theme to your therapy sessions
  • Celebrate the different languages and cultures of your community by wearing traditional clothing or bringing in food from around the world.
  • Develop special leaflets or advice sheets for bilingual families and communities, and hand these out on the day

Get involved on Social Media: Tweet, post on facebook or write a blog post. Use the hashtags #ICP2014 and #euSLTday to raise awareness. Share your speech bubbles on instagram!

Put on events:  Ask your local MP or decision makers to visit your service and see first hand the work that SLTs do with bilingual clients.

Hold a stall in your local shopping centre or a public place, explaining to the public what SLTs do.

Ask the schools your visit to hold an international communication day, celebrating the different ways we communicate around the world.
